Neil Cavuto: Fan, Friend, or Foe?
If Neil Cavuto was worried about his pal Imus, he had a funny way of showing it.
“You seem a little prickly this morning,” said Cavuto, the senior vice president, managing editor, and anchor of business news for the Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network.
Imus’s prickliness was the result of being offered advice on how to, as Cavuto put it, make an already great program that much greater. Unfortunately, Imus didn’t want to hear it.
“Listen, Mr. Mount Olympus,” said Cavuto. “I’d like to introduce you to EARTH!”
Told to “lighten up,” Imus’s reply was, “Butt out.” Touché.
Then, in an effort to waste everyone’s time, Imus peppered Cavuto with questions about his official bio, which boasts that he has interviewed all of the Fortune 500 CEOs.
Cavuto was most impressed with Microsoft’s Bill Gates, he said, though he also liked Lou Gerstner, the former head of IBM who “put all the critics to shame with a good sense of humor and very, very sharp management mind.”
Imus used to call Gerstner “Fat Lou,” because he had a full face. “Like you,” he told Cavuto. “But you have a round face, and you’re fat.”
Cavuto loves Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric; only met Apple CEO Steve Jobs once; has interviewed Viacom’s Sumner Redstone; and is a huge fan of Sirius XM’s Mel Karmazin.
“Can we just move on?” Cavuto said, finally. “It’s actually boring me now, and I don’t know why I’m here.”
Mercifully, Imus asked some relevant questions, like why President Obama shouldn’t be going around saying he “created or saved” 3.5 million jobs as a result of the stimulus.
“We have strict ways to follow progress in the economy,” said Cavuto. “The President is saying, had he not done this maybe these jobs would never have materialized, but we don’t change the math to suit our programs or fancy here.”
Elizabeth Hasselback broached this subject, albeit mildly, with Obama on “The View” yesterday, but Cavuto said he would have pressed Obama harder on the numbers.
“Maybe then you’d win that Cable Ace Award,” Imus said, referring to the five nominations Cavuto brags about in his bio, despite never having won one. Unlike, say, Imus, a four-time Marconi Award winner.
Despite his professional accomplishments, Cavuto sensed the I-Man was feeling down this morning. “I want you to be happy,” said Cavuto. “I want you to be grateful. And I want you to feel the love. “
So you’re the one…
