Imus Forgot Sam Moore's Birthday, But Moore Didn't Forget to Rib Him For It
Sam Moore turned 75 last week, but he doesn't look a day over 74. His longtime pal Imus forgot to wish him a happy birthday, leading Moore, the singer once part of the duo Sam & Dave, to conclude, “You call me for everything else, but you didn’t call me for my birthday!”
On The Imus Ranch Record II, which debuts next week, Moore sings the song “Bop,” a track he and Imus agreed on after hundreds of other options were discussed. Ever optimistic, Imus had told Moore, “If it doesn’t work out, it won’t be the first crummy record you’ve made.”
You can’t put a price on encouragement like that.
Moore was in a silly mood today, and happily told Imus he hadn’t listened to any of the other songs on The Imus Ranch Record II. In fact, he had no idea that artists like Jamey Johnson, Levon Helm, and Kinky Friedman had also participated, and let out a joyful whoop when Imus played the cut “Part Time Love,” by Mike Finnigan and The Phantom Blues Band.
“That’s singing!” Moore cried when the clip was over. “We don’t get that no more, do we?”
Asked who he, the original Soul Man, thinks is the greatest white blues singer, Moore thought for a few seconds and said, “Vince Gill,” which Imus lauded as “a great answer.”
Moore is in New York to perform at the Angel Ball for Cancer Research, but he shared with Imus today information about another charity close to his heart, The Starkey Hearing Foundation.
“It’s an amazing thing when you can stand and watch a child that has never heard before, and then they’re fitted with hearing aides,” he said. “And then you see that child’s face light up.”
An Arizona resident, Moore does not follow politics, and tried to pretend he follows sports, telling Imus, after a lengthy pause, that he likes the Jets. Asked who they played last weekend, Moore guessed The Vikings, which was wrong.
Moore protested that he had been busy celebrating his birthday, an occasion Imus forgot, in case Moore didn’t already tell him that. “I was downstairs at my birthday party!” he told Imus.
Which might explain why Imus never connected with his friend to wish him a happy 75th birthday. “That’s why I couldn’t get through,” he said. “I called on the upstairs phone!”
