Fox News Reporter Jonathan Hunt Provides Latest News From Haiti
Fox News's Jonathan Hunt spoke with Imus from the airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti this morning, saying today could be "a make-or-break day" for the devastated country still reeling from the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck there on Tuesday.
While aid planes are arriving from every corner of the globe, Hunt, who roamed the streets of the capital for hours yesterday, has yet to see that aid disbursed to the people who desperately need it.
"I did not see one instance where that aid — be it food, be it water, be it medical supplies, be it tents for shelter — was actually being handed out," he said.
Yet despite dire circumstances, the historically violent city of Port-au-Prince remained calm. "The Haitians are dealing with this with a sort of stoic determination," said Hunt.
But he cautioned, "I also got the sense from everybody that I spoke to that if they do not get that food, that water, those medical supplies, those tents within the next 24 to 48 hours maximum, then this situation could change very quickly."
Hunt called reports of gang violence inaccurate and likely isolated. He acknowledged, however, that stores have been looted and that people continue to compete for whatever water supply is left.
"They are coping as best the can," he said of the Haitians. "It may be an element of shock that they are still dealing with before they start thinking of survival of the fittest."
He concluded ominously, warning that situations such as this can, and will, change in the blink of an eye.
"If they're not getting that aid out for another 24 to 48 hours," said Hunt. "I would not want to be the person standing in the back of the truck handing out bottles of water. That could literally be a death sentence."
