Welcome To Fox, Charles Gasparino
Charles Gasparino, the newest member of the Fox Business Network family, must have taken Imus’s advice and grown... something... because he left “the dark side” last week.
“I always wanted to work for Fox; that’s the bottom line,” said Gasparino, whose most recent book “The Sellout” was a New York Times Bestseller.
As for what exactly he’ll do at Fox, Gasparino said only, “I’m here to make life difficult for the competition, which is what I love to do.” Though his departure from CNBC was amicable, he told Imus he can’t wait “to rip their lungs out everyday,” “to turn this into a bar room brawl,” and “to scratch, kick, and stomp them.”
Suitably afraid, Imus gave his guest props for breaking the story that Tiger Woods would hold a press conference last Friday for the first time since his life fell apart late last year.
“I did it from my underwear!” Gasparino said, referring to the state he was in when a call came in from one of Woods’s sponsors that the golfer was going to publicly apologize. That this information came from the business side—and not the sports side—is a testament to the importance of Tiger Woods, the brand over Tiger Woods, the golfer.
“He rolled out an image of a family guy: he was a decent person, the wife, the kids…he had this image that he was able to leverage into these massive deals,” said Gasparino. “And that image is gone.”
Rabble-rouser that he is, Gasparino called fellow Imus in the Morning guest Matt Taibbi’s initial article about Goldman Sachs, in which he called them icky names, “over the top.” While Goldman was bad, Gasparino said other banks like Citigroup, Lehman Brothers, and Bear Stearns were far worse.
“They’re the tallest midget in the room,” he said of Goldman. “To a degree, they’re dishonest. But they’re all dishonest.”
Dishonest and profitable, thanks to the money pumped in by the federal government and U.S. taxpayers. “The bank bailout worked great, and they kept the mechanisms in place so Wall Street is making billions of dollars,” said Gasparino.
Main Street, however, is a different story. Gasparino said that unemployment within the construction industry alone is at 23 percent. Curiously, the municipal workforce is experiencing far lower numbers, somewhere around three percent, the result of states using stimulus package money to plug their budget deficits and prevent layoffs.
“That’s Obama’s problem,” said Gasparino, who is not, despite Imus’s allegations, a member of organized crime.
“I’m sorry I said you were in the mob,” Imus said warmly. “But that’s the way it is.”
