Imus Will Turn The Blind Boys into Cowboys
Jimmy Carter of The Blind Boys of Alabama was likely not referring to Imus's wardrobe when he said he enjoys visiting Imus because, "Every time it seems to get better."
The Blind Boys of Alabama are I-Faves, and have been on the program for years in all its various incarnations. Their most recent album is called "Duets," and features artists like Lou Reed, Randy Travis, John Hammond, and Bonnie Raitt. Most of the tracks were recorded for other albums, but some were done just for "Duets."
Carter said he had the most fun working with Travis because he's a country guy at heart. Then Imus explained to his guest just how "country" Travis is.
"He's been in prison," said Imus. "I forget why, but he was in for a while."
Imus's friend Kyle Lehning produced "Up Above My Head — I Hear Music In The Air," the track The Blind Boys sang with Travis, and he also produced The Imus Ranch Record. Speaking of that...
"I was trying to get you to do 'Bad Moon Rising,' and you wouldn't do it,'" Imus said, talking to Carter about his plans for The Imus Ranch Record, Volume 2. "I suggested, 'You Can't Be A Beacon.'"
Carter gladly agreed that he and The Blind Boys would perform that song, and Imus squealed with joy, "You would? That's great!"
"I would love to come to your ranch, I really would," Carter said. "I have a way with kids, you know."
Imus said all of The Blind Boys of Alabama have an open invitation to The Imus Ranch, and he promised, "I'll make you into a cowboy."
As Carter and his fellow Blind Boys Bishop Billy Bowers, Ben Moore, Joey Williams, Ben Odom, and Ricky McKinnie prepared to perform, he thanked Imus again for the opportunity to be in studio today.
"I'm glad to be here again, man," he said. "Invite me more often!"
