Tim McCarver....Crooner?
Imus chatted today with his pal Tim McCarver, the former baseball player and current baseball analyst for Fox Sports, and admitted he had nothing better to do over the weekend than to watch an interview McCarver had done with Ricky Henderson.
"He was a special guy, and a special player," McCarver said about Henderson, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this year. "He's 52 years old and could probably go out there and play as well as some of those guys."
McCarver and his broadcasting partner Joe Buck will kick off playoff coverage this Friday night on FOX when the New York Yankees take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (or whatever they're called) in the American League Championship Series.
Even though both teams swept their opponents in the first round of post-season play, McCarver wasn't bored. "These sweeps have been compelling," he said.
Imus quickly moved on to the subject he had been dancing around all morning: McCarver's musical career, specifically an album he came out with last month called, Tim McCarver Sings Selections the Great American Songbook.
Say what you will about the singing — the title gets right to the point.
Imus paid the album the highest praise he is capable of, which was to say, "It's not terrible."
McCarver, thankfully, is realistic about his abilities. "It's better than not bad, but to expect Michael Feinstein is ridiculous." He paused. "Or even Kinky Friedman."
He said people are surprised when they hear him sing, as he frequently does when staying in various hotels around the country to cover baseball games. But he has no illusions.
"I understand that my stead in life is to be a broadcaster of baseball games until they tell me I can't do that anymore," he said.
(We wonder when and if someone will tell him not to sing anymore...)
Tune in to FOX's coverage of the ALCS, beginning this Friday night! Maybe McCarver will convince Buck to do a duet!
